Tezi and I Pick Our Next Book to Read! (February TBR)

picking_book_thumb_101

Just a couple of days ago, Tezi and I finished The Aeronaut’s Windlass, which is Book 1 of Jim Butcher’s new steampunk fantasy series, The Cinder Spires. (Our review of this book coming soon.) It was a book that we listened to together in audio book format while we drove around town or most favoritely, while we worked on our artistic creations: acting like little kids, coloring in our “adult” coloring books. See link here.

Book 2 of The Cinder Spires series may not be out until sometime next year, and so Tezi and I found ourselves having to decide what book we would like to read together next. As a gentleman, I offered to Thérèse that she should choose our next book, giving her complete control of our next reading endeavor. Her response, shockingly, was, “You pick, JJ,” at which point I said, “But I want you to pick,” and her response was a definite, “I want you to pick.” It carried on like this for some time, so in the end we decided that it would be a good idea to find a number of books – we ended up with six – that we thought sounded interesting, books that we would be interested in reading, and to write their titles on little pieces of paper and put them into a cup (licensed by Lucasfilm Ltd.), and then pick the book that we will be reading together next out of the cup. The process is of course very exciting and quite fun, so naturally we filmed it all, and share it here with you for your viewing enjoyment.

The Nightingale by Kristen HannahBooks Kristin Hannah

In love we find out who we want to be.
In war we find out who we are.

France, 1939

In the quiet village of Carriveau, Vianne Mauriac says goodbye to her husband, Antoine, as he heads for the Front. She doesn’t believe that the Nazis will invade France…but invade they do, in droves of marching soldiers, in caravans of trucks and tanks, in planes that fill the skies and drop bombs upon the innocent. When a German captain requisitions Vianne’s home, she and her daughter must live with the enemy or lose everything. Without food or money or hope, as danger escalates all around them, she is forced to make one impossible choice after another to keep her family alive.

Vianne’s sister, Isabelle, is a rebellious eighteen-year-old girl, searching for purpose with all the reckless passion of youth. While thousands of Parisians march into the unknown terrors of war, she meets Gäetan, a partisan who believes the French can fight the Nazis from within France, and she falls in love as only the young can…completely. But when he betrays her, Isabelle joins the Resistance and never looks back, risking her life time and again to save others.

With courage, grace and powerful insight, bestselling author Kristin Hannah captures the epic panorama of WWII and illuminates an intimate part of history seldom seen: the women’s war. The Nightingale tells the stories of two sisters, separated by years and experience, by ideals, passion and circumstance, each embarking on her own dangerous path toward survival, love, and freedom in German-occupied, war-torn France–a heartbreakingly beautiful novel that celebrates the resilience of the human spirit and the durability of women. It is a novel for everyone, a novel for a lifetime.

Out of options, Etta and Nicholas embark on a perilous journey across centuries and continents, piecing together clues left behind by the mysterious traveler. Living on her family’s gorgeous lakeside estate in Cornwall, England, Alice Edevane is a bright, clever, inquisitive, innocent, and precociously talented 14 year old who loves to write stories. But the mysteries she pens are no match for the one her family is about to endure….

One midsummer’s eve, after a beautiful party drawing hundreds of guests to the estate has ended, the Edevanes discover that their youngest son, Theo, has vanished without a trace. What follows is a tragedy that tears the family apart in ways they never imagined, leaving their estate as empty as their broken hearts.

Nearly 60 years later, having enjoyed a long, successful career as an author, Alice is now 80 years old and living in London. Theo’s case has never been solved, though Alice still harbours a suspicion as to the culprit.

Miles away, Sadie Sparrow, a young detective in the London police force, is staying at her grandfather’s house in Cornwall. While out walking one day, she stumbles upon the old estate – now crumbling and covered with vines, clearly abandoned long ago. Her curiosity is sparked, setting off a series of events that will bring her and Alice together and reveal shocking truths about a past long gone… yet more present than ever.

A lush, atmospheric tale of intertwined destinies, this latest novel from a masterful storyteller is spellbinding and satisfying.

Unintended Consequences by Marti Green91130EUCbLL

Nineteen years ago, Indiana police found the body of a young girl, burned beyond recognition and buried in the woods. They arrested George Calhoun for murdering his daughter, and his wife testified against him at the trial. George maintains he didn’t do it. That the body isn’t his little Angelina. But that’s all he’s ever said—no other defense, no other explanation. The jury convicted him. Now his appeals have been exhausted, and his execution is just six weeks away.

Dani Trumball, an attorney for the Help Innocent Prisoners Project, wants to believe him. After all, there was no forensic evidence to prove that the body in the woods was George’s daughter. But if the girl isn’t Angelina, then who is it? And what happened to the Calhouns’ missing daughter? Despite the odds, the questions push Dani to take the case.

For nineteen years, George Calhoun has stayed silent. But he’s ready to talk, and if the story he tells Dani is true, it changes everything.

You can see here from our list that no matter which book we picked, we’d likely have a good read ahead of us. So to find out which book Tezi and I will be reading together next, go watch our video! 🙂
